BDSFA Girls' League - 30/6/09
Dorothy Barley 1 (E Webster)
Godwin 2 (Ross, Harris)
WITH BOTH SIDES needing victory to secure runners-up spot, there was all to play for in the final BDSFA Girls’ League fixture of the season.
Each team started cautiously in the seering heat and struggled to find their rhythm as both defences were on top.
The breakthrough came courtesy of Ellie Webster as Godwin conceded possession cheaply on the halfway line for the Barley winger to counter attack and put her side 1-0 up with a well-taken finish.
That was Dorothy Barley’s only real out-and-out chance of the game however as Godwin laid siege to their opponents goal, creating chances through the tireless running of Louise Dove and Jodie Moore on the flanks.
An equaliser came just before halftime when Moore’s persistence caused the ball to fall to unmarked Hollie Ross inside the penalty area. She tapped in to level things up, netting her nineteenth goal of the season.
After the restart, Godwin continued to press. Briony Hagger, impressive in her lone striker role, used her skill and trickery to carve chances for herself, Ross and Moore as Godwin pressed for the winner.
With less than a minute remaining, Dorothy Barley’s defence cleared the ball, seeking to relieve pressure on their goal. Skipper Cara Harris, drafted into an emergency defensive role, lashed the loose ball first time, sending it sailing over the crowded penalty area and into the top corner from her own half.
There was hardly any time left for Barley to respond though as Godwin claimed the victory, finishing second in the table, just one point behind champions St Joseph’s.
Godwin: Sach, Sinclair, Moore, Dove, Harris (capt), Hagger, Ross, Odanye.
