THE ESSEX SCHOOLS' FA County Final at Arsenal's Academy Ground proved a tough challenge for the borough's qualifying teams.

Godwin suffered defeat in their first match, losing 4-0 to eventual winners Heybridge but bounced back to come within a whisker of beating local rivals St Joseph's. Hollie Ross' close range shot rose steeply over the bar after great play from Amber Wallace, Jodie Moore and Briony Hagger for the game's only clear-cut chance. That miss however left the scores at 0-0 and Godwin fell to their second defeat of the afternoon in their final match against St Thomas' from Brentwood.

Elsewhere, St Joseph's also produced a creditable goalless draw against St Thomas' but were crushed in their final match against Heybridge.

In the girls' league, Monteagle beat St Peter's to move into third place.
