Jersey Festival Update: 6/4/09

SUNDAY EVENING WAS dominated by the consumption of giant yorkshire puddings and a well-received roast dinner. This was followed by a surprise fun activity beloved of teachers everywhere who want half an hour's peace - writing!

With diaries updated, the lads then spent time in the newly built games room. So new in fact that they only started constructing it on Saturday! Much time and money was invested in the fictional violence of video games and possibly the worst ever game of pool between Ernest and Siju. It was so bad that bullying hustlers Farquhar and Duggins were required to finish the game before the 10 p.m. curfew

Next morning, bright sunshine illuminated the island again as Barking & Dagenham squared up to Thurrock for the twentieth time this season.

After six minutes, Thurrock were two goals up without controversy!

Eventually, Barking & Dagenham decided to start playing after fifteen minutes and should have scored but for an obvious foul on Daniel Boyce. Reno Turner then went close with a stinging free kick but somehow a Thurrock defender got his head to it and nodded it over. Ernest Okoh then shot across goal when well placed and it seemed the cobwebs were well and truly swept away.

The second half saw Barking & Dagenham take the game to Thurrock. Sadly, they didn't give it back.

Boyce was denied by an outstanding save by the opposition keeper. Inevitably though, pushing forward, Thurrock caught Barking & Dagenham on the break and added a superb third as the team paid the price for a poor start.

Elsewhere, South Birmingham beat Gloucester 2-0 and Felling were defeated by the same scoreline against Orpington.

A mood-lifting trip to Green Island was up next. In sympathy with the team, the sun decided to go in - but at least the rain stayed away.

After lunch, the boys clambered into the trusty mini-bus and went to Amaizin! - a theme park which features a maze made of maize. Do you see what they did with the name?

Unfortunately, being early April, the maize hadn't grown yet but go-karts, mini golf, an adventure playground, bikes and a toboggan slide provided welcome distractions.

Despite all this entertainment, most of the squad decided to have shooting practice on the football pitch. They spent hours on it. Not many goals were scored as we seem to have a squad of outstanding goalkeepers!

Controversially, unconfirmed reports allege that the best goal of the afternoon was delivered by the "magical" (sic) foot of Mr Farquhar!

Fun was had by all despite the dipping temperature.

In the evening, the squad have their daily possing in the pool after dinner and then phone calls home are planned.

Tuesday sees Barking & Dagenham contest a potentially lively tie with Gloucester..

Pink Gloves - French football's influence over the youth of Britain reaches worrying levels
