Monteagle Shield 2010
FOR THE SECOND successive year, Godwin girls lifted the Monteagle Shield to complete a memorable year's football for the Finnymore Road side. The borough six-a-side title now sits alongside the London 5-a-side Cup and the BDSFA Girls' League Trophy, wrapping up a hat-trick of major titles for the school.
The tournament began with a goalless draw between Hunter's Hall and St Joseph's Red, before Godwin hit the ground running against St Joseph's Blue. Louise Dove opened their account early on, before Faith Efemwen and Morgan-Lilly Duffield made it three by half-time. From then on, Godwin stroked the ball around with confidence, creating chance after chance. Dove converted two of them, with Efemwen adding her second to finish off a comprehensive 6-0 win.
Hall then chalked up a victory over the same opponents, racing to a 2-0 lead after only a couple of minutes. From then on, St Joseph's Blue offered some resistance but Rosie McCarthy summed up a much improved display with a fine solo goal at the end.
Flowing
St Joseph's Red then went down 3-0 to Godwin with Dove again opening the scoring. A superb flowing move was converted by Briony Hagger for her thirty-eigth goal of the season before Hollie Ross's drilled free-kick ensured an unassailable lead.
That meant that the penultimate match between Hunters Hall and Godwin would decide the competition and once again the latter side dominated possession and territory. Coral Coote was in top form though between the sticks for Hall, who left McCarthy up top as a lone striker, hoping to hit Godwin on the break.
Both teams cancelled each other out though as the stalemate ensured a share of the spoils, which was enough to secure top spot for the borough champions once again.
